Subject: Sign-on Letter: Urgent Need for Robust Methane Regulation in the UK Energy Sector
Dear Secretary of State,
We, the undersigned organisations and individuals, are writing to urge you to commit to develop a strong, enforceable regulation of methane emissions from the fossil fuel sector in the UK’s forthcoming National Methane Action Plan.
Despite methane’s role as a climate super-pollutant, more than 80 times more powerful than CO₂ over a 20-year period, it remains dangerously underregulated in UK fossil fuel operations. Tackling methane is one of the cheapest and most effective strategies to slow global warming.
If the UK intends to spotlight its Methane Action Plan at COP30, it must reflect genuine leadership that matches the ambition of other international partners. As scrutiny grows on the true value of such climate pledges, an announcement of concrete methane regulations would show that the UK’s leadership is credible and not just symbolic.
Why This Matters Now:
The UK has committed to the Global Methane Pledge- a reduction in global methane emissions by 30% by 2030, but it currently lacks the regulatory tools to achieve this.
The EU Methane Regulation will soon require importers to report and meet performance standards, putting UK fossil fuel exports and purchases at risk without regulatory alignment.
Without clear rules, the UK risks becoming a dumping ground for high-emissions fuels no longer acceptable in the EU market.
There’s a clear pathway forward - Clean Air Task Force’s UK Regulatory Roadmap offers a practical, evidence-based path to dramatically reduce methane from oil and gas.
We encourage you to seize this opportunity and commit to developing regulations on methane emissions from fossil fuels produced at home and imported into the UK. This is one of the fastest and cheapest solutions we have to address climate change, hold major polluters accountable, and safeguard the UK’s climate credibility. We cannot afford to miss this opportunity.
